Bolivia - Juan Jose Torres

Torres

Torres served as the president of Bolivia from 1970 to 1971. Torres was incredibly left when compared to Bolivian presidents throughout history. He placed a focus on the representation of the workers of Bolivia in his presidency.

Asamblea del Pueblo

Torres led an "Asamblea del Pueblo" , or Assembly of the People, in which the voices of the workers were finally heard directly by the government. He essentially granted this assembly the power of a parliament, making for an incredibly democratic state.

Overthrow

In August of 1971, Torres was overthrown in a militaristic coup for his heavily left policies. This coup was covertly funded by the US, and supported by Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger. This coup put dictator Colonel Hugo Banzer Suárez in power.
