Chile - Salvador Allende

Allende

Allende, president of Chile from 1970-73, led his campaign on a pledge of bringing socialism to Chile, a country long ruled by a wealthy upper class, with a massive wealth disparity.

Social Programs

Allende primarily focused on the use of vast social programs to support the poor, including food and education, as well as deprivatizing many industries in Chile to prevent monopolies.

Coup

Allende was overthrown in a coup led by Augusto Pinochet, who would become dictator of the country for years. While the US did not actively support the coup, coup attempts had been made years prior, and the US backed Pinochet's dictatorial, authoritative government.
